Description
Not too big, not too small, and with sterile flowers that keep the butterflies coming all summer into fall, Summer Sips ‘Sangria’ is the perfect Butterfly Bush! Beginning in late spring and continuing to the first frost in fall, LOADS of flower spikes packed with fragrant, nectar-rich, dark purplish red flowers reach out like wands beyond the dense mound of attractive grey-green foliage. The flowers don’t require deadheading, however doing so will encourage quicker development of new flowers. We tend to deadhead the ones we have growing in pots that are situated in sitting areas where plants will be viewed from up close. Whether you choose to deadhead or not, the flowers just keep coming and coming all season long on bushes that are 3 to 4 feet tall and wide. As mentioned, the flowers are sterile so no worries about this one spreading in those locations where Buddleia tend to be invasive. You might also be happy to know that deer and rabbits turn their nose up to butterfly bushes.
Landscape & Garden Uses
We have Summer Sips ‘Sangria’ Butterfly Bush growing in both garden beds and pots in our landscape. In the ground, its smaller stature to maybe 4 feet tall and wide make it an ideal choice for smaller garden spaces and containers. We suggest a pot that is at least 15 inches or more in diameter. It larger spaces it can be planted in groupings or as a colorful, natural hedge. A fine addition to butterfly and hummingbird gardens, purple or red theme gardens, beneficial pollinator gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 3 feet apart for solid hedges or mass plantings; 7 feet or more for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Summer Sips ‘Sangria’ Butterfly Bush is exceptionally easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full to mostly sun. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for best flowering and overall performance. As with so many other plants, constantly soggy or wet soils can cause problems with the roots. Spent flowers do not require deadheading but doing so can encourage quicker development of new flowers.

The plant arrived safely and was planted the same day. we are fortunate to have had a lot of rain since the planting so the plant seems to be doing okay. The flowers are smaller than I expected. There was nothing to compare them to.———————————————————-We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
