Description

Note: All of our 1 gallon size Clematis vines are trellised 2 year old plants

While most Clematis species are deciduous, which means they lose their foliage during the cool season, the Snowdrift is an evergreen! But the unique characteristics don’t stop there. While most other Clematis flower in spring or summer, the wonderfully fragrant, star shaped, pure white flowers of Snowdrift are borne in profusion mid to late winter and continue through early spring. The flowers stand out beautifully against the dark green foliage. Which brings up another unique characteristic. While most clematis have small leaves, the elongated leaves of Snowdrift are very large and lustrous, providing a tropical effect in the garden. Vigorously growing up to 20 feet in length, Snowdrift Clematis will quickly cover arches, fences, pergolas and other structures.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing over 20 feet long, the Snowdrift Evergreen Clematis needs plenty of room to grow. This magnificent vine is ideal for use to cover fences, arbors, pergolas and other overhead structures. Can be grown on a large trellis against a wall, which creates a very beautiful “live wall.” A fine addition to fragrance gardens, white theme gardens, and tropical-look gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 4 to 6 feet apart to cover fences and walls

Growing Preferences

Though Clematis armandii is very difficult to propagate from cuttings, it is exceptionally easy to grow, and quite vigorous in the landscape. It grows best in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Though it’s quite drought tolerant when established, it appreciate an occasional drink during prolonged drought. Make sure not to plant this one too deep as it tends to smother the plant. See pruning instructions just below.

Clematis Pruning Group 1

Clematis in pruning Group 1 flower on the previous years growth and therefore should not be cut back ground level. If you prune, do so as soon as possible after flowering. Avoid pruning after the end of July so the plant has time to produce next year’s flower buds before winter sets in. To reduce bulk of older plants, additional pruning can be performed to remove three or four year old wood. Make pruning cuts above a pair of healthy buds.

I was unable to find Clematis armandii locally, and Wilson Bros. had the best price of all the online retailers. My order arrived quickly, it was well packed and in good condition, and was taller than I expected at about 2 feet. I planted it in cold winter weather about 2 weeks ago; one branch near the top died back, but now it appears to have stabilised and a new bud is swelling just under where I clipped off the dead branch. The shipping package was somewhat mangled on arrival, but the plant was ok. Waited a few days and then planted in the yard. It seems to be doing ok, sending out new shoots looking for something to wrap around. Some of the leaves have been partially eaten. Not sure if it is the rabbits in the yard or insects.——————————————-Try some Neem oil for insects and maybe some Rabbit Repellant, you should be able to finds those at you local hardware store. We purchased 2 of these vines and were impressed with how “healthy” they were when delivered. They are both healthy but 1 is thriving and growing and the other one still looks healthy but hasn’t seemed to get any larger even though they are only about 4-5 ft apart so in almost identical environment. I’m not worried…but do wish they were growing at same rate. I’m trusting that at some point, this difference won’t be apparent. I probably wouldn’t have made this on-line plant purchase without the excellent customer service I received from the woman I spoke with who went out of her way to make me feel comfortable about doing that….she even went out to plant and took picture and said she would follow up on plant selection! EXCELLENT customer service from your employee!——————————–The other one will probably catch up….if not maybe prune the larger one in th fall to match the other one. Just a photograph on a Facebook gardening page – that was all it took for me to order this beautiful evergreen Clematis. I was more than thrilled to learn a nursery in Georgia had the species in stock. My plants arrived 2 days later: potted, moist, & marvelously packaged to sustain a ride in a delivery truck. They were a nice size & seemed healthy. Luckily there were a few blooms remaining so I was able to smell the sweet fragrance.
