Description
Due to its extremely attractive “shaggy” bark that peels away from the tree in thin strips up to 4 feet long, the Shagbark Hickory is a tree that is impossible to go unnoticed. Passersby just have to stop and reach out and touch it. But the fine attributes don’t stop there. This Hickory produces what many chefs and nut connoisseurs consider to be the best tasting edible nuts of any North American native nut-bearing tree, surpassing in flavor even pecans and walnuts. Growing an average of 70 feet tall and 50 feet wide, and clothed with shaggy bark and attractive, pinnately compound green leaves that turn a brilliant golden-yellow in fall, the Shagbark Hickory is a fine addition to the edible landscape that also shade tree and a source of food and shelter for wildlife.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 70 to 90 feet tall and 50 to 70 feet wide, the Shagbark Hickory is ideal for use around the home and in parks or other properties that provide the space it needs to grow. An excellent shade tree around the home and for outdoor living areas and is nice in landscape and sunny woodland borders. The very strong wood has been used in the past for gun stocks, tool handles, ladders and furniture. It is a fine addition to the edible landscape, wildlife gardens and native gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 80+ feet for space between trees
Growing Preferences
The Shagbark Hickory is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average to high fertility and full sun to part shade. We suggest at least 5 hours of sun per day for best performance. Tolerates occasionally dry soils when established.
