Description
Its smaller yet elegant stature and gorgeous fully double ruby red flowers make October Magic Ruby Camellia simply hard to resist. Ruby has a compact, lower, slightly open mounding form so lends itself well to smaller garden spaces. The bright flowers stand out remarkably well against the glossy, dark olive green foliage.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing only 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide with a lower mounding form October Magic Rose Camellia is perfect for smaller garden spaces or those spots that call for a smaller plant. It is ideal for use as an accent, grouping or hedge in home foundation plantings and landscape and woodland borders. October Magic Rose combines well with Azaleas, Rhododendron, Mahonia, Aucuba, Pieris, Winter Daphne, Hosta Lillies, Ferns and a host of other beautiful shade to part shade plants that belong in the woodland or woodland border garden. A perfect fit in cottage gardens and cut flower gardens. Also suitable for containers that can be overwintered indoors by those who live and garden above USDA Zone 7a, where this camellia variety is not reliably winter hardy. Find Your Zone
Suggested Spacing: 3 to 4 feet apart for solid hedge; 8 feet apart for space between plants
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Camellia variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Camellia adapt well to various soil types. They prefer a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellias grow and bloom their best in partial shade, with some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sunlight is perfect. All-day filtered sun is fine. Late evening sun is fine.
