Description
An award-winning Hypericum developed by noted plantsman Paul Cappiello of Yew Dell Gardens in Crestwood, Kentucky, ‘Blue Velvet’ St. Johns Wort features lustrous, fragrant, blue to silvery blue leaves on a domed mound to 3 feet tall and around 4 feet wide. Abundant vibrant yellow blooms with a boss of fiber-optic-like center stamens are produced over a long period in summer. As an added bonus, following the bloom are bright red berries that persist through fall. This award-winning, sun-loving shrub is perfect as an accent in smaller garden spaces and containers or in groupings in larger borders. An exceptionally low-maintenance plant with high drought, heat and cold tolerance, and the deer and rabbits turn their nose up to it!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 2 to 3 feet tall and spreading to 3 to 4 feet wide, Blue Velvet St John’s Wort is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces or in groupings in larger landscape and woodland borders or on slopes. An excellent accent or filler shrub amongst other shrubs in home foundation plantings. Also nice as a solo or combined with other plants in container gardens. A fine addition to blue or yellow gardens, pollinator gardens, cottage gardens and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 36 inches apart for mass plantings; 5 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
St John’s Wort is easy to grow and maintain in a wide range of conditions. It flourishes in most any moist to dry well-drained soil, including clay, and in full sun to part shade. It really thrives on sandy soils in full sun. The plant is less floriferous in part shade.
